M.A. in Chinese Language & Linguistics

The M.A. degree offers courses focusing on training future teachers of Chinese in the secondary schools and prepares others for advanced research and degrees in areas related to China and other Chinese communities.

Chinese Language M.A. Requirements

Ph.D in Chinese Language & Linguistics

The Ph.D. degree in East Asian Languages & Literatures aims to train future scholars for the academic profession. The Ph.D. specialization in Chinese language/linguistics offers students the opportunity to develop scholarly expertise in Chinese historical linguistics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and/or language pedagogy.

Chinese Linguistics Ph.D. Program Requirements

M.A. in Chinese Literature

The M.A. degree is offered in the field of Chinese literary and cultural studies with further emphasis on genre studies, literary history, or literary theory and criticism. A variety of courses are taught on the subjects of classical Chinese poetry, Ming-Qing fiction, and 20th century Chinese literary and cultural studies.

The Ph.D. degree in Chinese literary and cultural studies offers concentrations in either the classical, pre-modern, or the 20th century period. The program also encourages comparative and interdisciplinary studies exploring the relationships between the histories, cultures, and literatures of East Asia as well as within this region.

The M.A. program in Japanese Language/Linguistics is designed to produce Japanese language specialists who are trained in all the fields of Japanese Linguistics (pedagogy, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, phonology and morphology, and syntax and semantics) with one of the fields as their specialization. The program also provides practical teaching experience for future teachers of Japanese.

Ph.D in Japanese Language & Linguistics

The Ph.D. in Japanese Language and Linguistics is designed to produce scholars with high-level competence in the field of specialization within Japanese Linguistics (pedagogy, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, phonology and morphology, and syntax and semantics). The program also aims to develop well-rounded Japanese language specialists who are competent in multiple subfields of Japanese Linguistics and equipped to execute comparative research in East Asian Languages.

M.A. in Japanese Literature

The M.A. degree is offered in the field of Japanese literary studies, with emphasis on poetry, prose and drama of both the premodern and modern eras. The program offers students training in the history, theory, and culture of literary genres from specific periods, providing a solid foundation for a subsequent Ph.D. course of study.   Academic training in Japanese language teaching is also available.

The MA degree is offered in the field of Korean literary studies in major genres of poetry, fiction, and drama from the classical period to the 21st century. The program is designed to provide students with advanced academic training and scholarly expertise in the history, theory, and criticism of the chosen literary genres from a specific period. The program is also intended to provide professional training and practical teaching experience for future instructors and specialists in Korean literary studies. As the faculty and facilities in East Asian literatures within EALL are numerous and diverse, encouragement is given to those students who are interested in inter-East Asian literary/cultural research and teaching careers.

The Ph.D. specialization in Korean Literature is offered with concentration in Korean literary studies, exploring its traditions, both pre-modern and modern, in the changing contexts of historical, socio-cultural development s in Korea up to the present. The program is designed to produce scholars, researchers, and professionals with high-level competence and expertise in the study of literary history, literary theories and criticism, and culture of Korea. By offering ample opportunity to investigate inter-East Asian literary/cultural relationships, the program also fosters the growth of the student’s research interest in academic fields closely related to Korean literature and culture

Korean Flagship: M.A. in Korean for Professionals

The M.A. program aims to produce professionals who can function in Korean in their chosen fields. After two years of intensive Korean language training, graduates of this program are expected to take their place among the next generation of global professionals as Korea specialists, commanding professional-level proficiency in Korean. The M.A. program includes a semester of overseas component which provides intensive language training and internship opportunities in an immersion environment. The successful completion of the program leads to the Master of Arts degree in Korean for Professionals.
