EALL presentation at the Manoa Research Day 2024 at the State Capitol

We are delighted to announce the success of the recent participation of the EALL department in Manoa Research Day 2024, where we had the opportunity to showcase our excellence to esteemed members of the Legislature.

Dr. Andre Haag, Dr. David Krolikoski, and Dr. Mee-Jeong Park (in the picture) represented EALL with a compelling poster presentation held at the State Capitol building. Among 37 participating departments, EALL’s presentation received significant attention and praise.

A comprehensive poster (see the photo below) and PowerPoint slideshow highlighted EALL’s programs, events, faculty, and students. The professors met several members of the state government and legislature, including Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke (see the photo above) and Senator Michelle Kidani (see the photo above), vice chair of the Senate Committee on Higher Education, whose aide turned out to be our own Chinese Flagship BA graduate (Danicia Honda). They also engaged with Representative Amy Perruso, chair of the House Committee on Higher Education & Technology, members of the House Committee on Culture, Arts, & International Affairs Andrew Takuya Garrett (who represents the Manoa area) and Jackson Sayama (representing St. Louis Heights, Pālolo, Kaimuki), and many more.

Provost Michael Bruno and Dean Peter Arnade visited the EALL department table, noting its impressive display with four banners (EALL and CJK), along with flyers, promotional items, and refreshments. Numerous visitors acknowledged the department’s contributions and shared their personal experience related to EALL’s three languages and cultures.

While the immediate impact of EALL’s participation may not be fully realized, it succeeded in promoting the EALL programs to important members of the legislature as well as our own UHM leadership.

Special thanks are extended to Dr. Andre Haag for his dedication in collecting data and photos, Dr. David Krolikoski for his design expertise and poster production, and the graduate faculty members Dr. Yun Peng, Dr. Atsushi Hasegawa, Dr. Mary Kim, and Dr. Jiang Song for their contributions to the PowerPoint slideshow. Appreciation is also extended to all who supported the department.
